Exclusive Interview: Cast Members Discuss Adapting Gabriel García Márquez’s ‘100 Years Of Solitude’ for Netflix
As the highly anticipated finale of Netflix’s epic adaptation of Gabriel García Márquez’s ‘100 Years Of Solitude’ approaches, several cast members have shared their experiences working on the project. The eight-episode Part Two of the series, which has been split into two parts, is now streaming on Netflix, with the special final instalment dropping separately on August 26.
Among the cast members who have come on board Part Two are iconic Colombian star Margarita Rosa de Francisco, Estefanía Piñeres, Emmanuel Restrepo, and Sebastián Osorio. In an exclusive interview with Deadline, these talented actors spoke about the challenges and rewards of adapting such a complex and revered novel for the screen.
De Francisco, famous in Latin America for her role in the long-running series ‘Café Con Aroma de Mujer,’ plays the character of Fernanda del Carpio in the series. When asked about the experience of working on ‘100 Years Of Solitude,’ she noted, ‘It’s very intimidating to play a character in such a relevant and important work, and one that so many critics have said outright was impossible to film.’ De Francisco emphasized the importance of finding herself in the work in order to be faithful to it, and trusting the series writers.
Osorio, who stars as Aureliano Babilonia in the series, has appeared in shows including the telenovela ‘Pasión de Gavilanes.’ He agreed that it was both exciting and intimidating to land a role in an adaptation of such a seminal novel. ‘These characters take on a quality that is almost mythological,’ he said. ‘They’re in this kind of demigod space where you have to meet them as a character.’
Piñeres, whose credits include the movie ‘Malta’ and the Netflix miniseries ‘Delirium,’ plays Amaranta Úrsula in the series. She noted that the characters in ‘100 Years Of Solitude’ have a ‘quality that is almost mythological,’ and that it was essential to trust the writers in order to bring these complex characters to life.
Restrepo, who stars in the series as José Arcadio, has appeared in Netflix’s romantic drama ‘Eva Lasting.’ He spoke about the sheer scale of the production, which employed a massive cast and crew as well as local artisans who worked to recreate the mythical town of Macondo. ‘So many things had to align for this particular production to be able to get off the ground… we had 1500 people working,’ he said. ‘I’ve never seen anything like it, and I hope I will again.’
The Netflix adaptation of ‘100 Years Of Solitude’ has been a significant creative and financial boost to the Colombian TV industry. The production has not only employed a large number of actors and crew members but has also given local artisans the opportunity to work on a major international project.
The production team behind ‘100 Years Of Solitude’ includes directors Laura Mora and Carlos Moreno, who helmed seven of the eight episodes in Part Two. The final episode was directed by Alex García López, who has worked on the popular Netflix series ‘The Witcher.’ The production company behind the series is Bogotá-based Dynamo.
The trailer for the finale of ‘100 Years Of Solitude’ is now available to watch, giving fans a glimpse of the epic conclusion to this highly anticipated series.
