Of the 312 players who teed off at the 2026 U.S. Amateur Championship last weekend, England’s Jack Whaley emerged as the last player standing. In a thrilling victory, Whaley defeated Stanford’s Jay Leng, Jr. in the 36-hole final on Sunday at Merion Golf Club, securing the Havemeyer Trophy and cementing his place as the third Englishman and first since Matt Fitzpatrick in 2013 to raise the coveted trophy.

However, before Whaley could claim the title, he had to overcome a grueling gauntlet of matches. The 16-for-11 playoff that filled the match-play bracket and cemented the top 64 players from the stroke-play portion of the championship was a daunting task, especially for a player who had never competed in front of such a large crowd.

According to Whaley, the nerves were palpable, with the crowd’s energy evident as soon as he arrived at the course. ‘Oh, the nerves were high. Really high,’ Whaley recalled. ‘And as soon as we arrived, there was no one on site. So I’m going to the range, which is the other side of what almost felt like a town. It was miles away. So you don’t really get to see what people were arriving and what was happening back at Merion. So by the time we got to the putting green and was sat just watching everyone walking in and filling up around the 13th green, you’re like, ‘Oh God, this is a lot of people,’ you know?’

The 13th hole, a notoriously difficult par-3, has a reputation for ruining and making championships in the past. Whaley, however, managed to rise to the challenge, sinking a crucial birdie to overcome the nerves and competitors. ‘I mean it sounds pretty easy, but when you actually stood there and think, ‘I’m the last group and there’s already been seven birdies, I need to do something here,’

Whaley’s birdie on the 13th hole marked a turning point in his week, as he was able to overcome the initial nerves and make his way into the match play bracket. From there, he went on to secure a series of crucial victories, including a thrilling 22-hole win in his first match that afternoon. ‘That win opened my eyes, bolstered my confidence, and served as a lynchpin for my memorable run,’ Whaley explained.

Whaley’s favorite memory with his dad was the playoff hole, where they made the cut in the biggest amateur event in the world. ‘That was probably one of the biggest moments for us,’ he said, reflecting on the experience. ‘And then probably second is the last part in the championship match.’ Whaley’s victory marked a historic moment for English golfers, and his memorable week at Merion Golf Club will be remembered for years to come.

Despite the nerves and pressure, Whaley managed to stay focused and composed throughout the tournament. ‘You’re still going to stand there and make a birdie and get through it,’ he said, recalling the experience. ‘So the sigh of relief after we made that birdie and got through to the match play was massive.’ Whaley’s ability to stay calm under pressure was a key factor in his success, and he credits his experience and preparation for helping him overcome the challenges of the tournament.

Whaley’s victory at the 2026 U.S. Amateur Championship marked a significant milestone in his golfing career, and he will undoubtedly be remembered as one of the most talented and resilient golfers to have competed in the tournament.
