Mechanical Issue Suspected in Greek Helicopter Crash That Killed Honeymooners and Pilot
Greek Helicopter Crash Investigation Underway
A tragic helicopter crash on the Greek island of Sifnos has claimed the lives of a newlywed couple from Britain and a seasoned pilot, sparking an investigation into the cause of the accident.
The private Bell 206 helicopter, which was carrying the couple, Marie Ebert, 30, and Alexander Cromie, 31, both from London, and pilot Giorgos Raikos, 53, of Greece, crashed near a landing pad on Monday, exploding on impact and causing a fireball and thick plumes of dark smoke.
According to eyewitnesses, the helicopter was spiraling out of control before the crash, with many local people describing a ‘bizarre engine noise coming from the aircraft.’ Sifnos Deputy Mayor Yiannis Rafeletos expressed his shock and sorrow at the tragic event, stating, ‘So much happiness has turned into sorrow.’
Pilot Raikos was an experienced air force officer and a former member of the Greek military, with officials describing him as ‘extremely experienced.’ The couple had hired the helicopter to travel from a village near Athens to Sifnos, a popular holiday destination about 120 miles away from Greece’s capital.
The investigation into the crash is being led by Greece’s National Organization for the Investigation of Air and Railway Accidents and Transport Safety. The civil aviation authority in Greece has allegedly recalled all Bell 206 helicopters until further notice, following the incident.
The victims, Marie and Alexander, were both professionals in their respective fields. Marie was a senior specialist for management consultants Bain & Company, while Alexander worked as a vice president in private wealth solutions for Blackstone, an asset management company. The couple’s colleagues and employers have expressed their shock and condolences at the tragic loss.
Blackstone issued a statement, saying, ‘We are shocked by the tragic passing of three people including our colleague Alex Cromie and his wife, Marie Ebert, who were celebrating their honeymoon. Alex was beloved by everyone who knew and worked with him at Blackstone, and our thoughts and prayers are with his loved ones.’
A representative for Bain & Company echoed those sentiments, stating, ‘We are shocked to read reports of a tragic accident in Greece regarding one of our colleagues and her husband. Our thoughts and support are with the families involved at this very difficult time.’
The investigation into the crash is ongoing, with further tests needed to determine the precise cause of death. The incident serves as a tragic reminder of the risks associated with air travel and the importance of maintaining the highest standards of safety in the aviation industry.
