In a move that promises to revolutionize the healthcare landscape for millions of seniors, retail giant Costco Wholesale Corporation has announced a groundbreaking partnership with nonprofit insurer SCAN Group to offer Costco-branded Medicare plans. The pioneering collaboration marks Costco’s first foray into the Medicare market, with the two companies teaming up to provide Medicare Advantage products in two states and a Medicare supplement plan in a third, pending regulatory approval from the Medicare agency.

The partnership, which was revealed on Tuesday, aims to simplify the often-complex and confusing world of Medicare for older adults, providing them with seamless access to a wide range of healthcare services. According to the Wall Street Journal, the initial markets targeted by the companies include approximately five million Medicare enrollees.
Under the innovative arrangement, Costco will leverage its vast retail network to market branded health insurance products for seniors, offering a comprehensive suite of services that could encompass prescription drug access, Medflex over-the-counter benefits, vision care, audiology, and other essential health benefits. The plans will be available for purchase in Costco stores, as well as through insurance agents and other standard channels.
However, federal rules prohibit bundling a Costco membership with the health plans, ensuring that seniors can access the insurance products without being tied to the retailer’s membership program.
