Tragic Hotel Fire in Kolkata Claims 9 Lives

A devastating fire broke out at a hotel in Kolkata, the capital of India’s West Bengal state, in the early hours of Wednesday, resulting in the loss of at least nine lives and leaving six others injured.

The fire erupted around 1:45 a.m. at a hotel in central Kolkata, close to the West Bengal Fire Department headquarters, according to the Press Trust of India news agency.

Five fire engines were swiftly deployed to bring the blaze under control, while police and disaster management teams worked tirelessly to conduct rescue operations. The injured were promptly taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

However, firefighters struggled to reach people trapped on the upper floors due to the thick smoke that engulfed the building, a police officer revealed to the news agency.

The fire was eventually brought under control, but the cause of the fire remains unknown, and authorities are now focused on rescuing anyone still trapped inside and conducting a thorough investigation.

According to police, nine people have been confirmed dead, but the toll could rise, and rescue operations are ongoing.

Deadly Fires in India: A Repeating Cycle

Deadly fires, often linked to electrical faults or gas cylinder explosions, are a common occurrence in India. Investigators have frequently pointed to safety lapses and inadequate enforcement of fire regulations as contributing factors to recurring loss of life.

Just last Monday, a blaze at a hotel in West Bengal’s temple town of Tarapith left at least seven people dead and several others critically injured. In December, at least 25 people were killed after a fire ripped through a popular nightclub in western Goa state.

These tragic incidents highlight the need for stricter fire safety regulations and more effective enforcement to prevent such disasters from occurring in the future.
