Sitting Up Straight May Improve Your Mood and Decision-Making

A new study from McGill University has found that sitting up straight may have a subtle yet significant impact on both our emotional state and decision-making abilities. According to the research, individuals who sat upright reported more positive feelings and performed better during a task involving risk and reward compared to those who slouched or sat in the control condition.

The study, which was conducted by Jorge Armony and Soren Wainio-Theberge, involved nearly 200 participants from the McGill community. The researchers used a unique approach to manipulate the participants’ posture without revealing the study’s goal. They achieved this by adjusting the height of the desk and the placement of the tablet to encourage participants to sit in either an upright or slouched position.

The participants were then asked to complete a risk-taking game involving a virtual balloon. The game required players to inflate the balloon to earn larger rewards, but they could lose everything from that round if it burst. The results showed that participants who sat upright took greater risks and earned larger rewards over the course of the game. However, it’s essential to note that these participants were not simply behaving more recklessly. Instead, they were engaging in more effective risk-taking, as explained by Armony.
