Jonathan Tropper Unpacks ‘Lucky’ Finale Twist & Ryan Gosling’s Star Wars: Starfighter Voice Inspiration
Jonathan Tropper, the creator of the Apple TV series ‘Lucky,’ recently spoke with us about the show’s final episode and his experience working on the upcoming Star Wars film, ‘Star Wars: Starfighter.’
Tropper explained that the decision to let the main character, Lucky, and her father go was a deliberate choice to create a sense of closure and resolution for the audience. He stated that the nefarious queen-pin Priscilla’s (Annette Bening) character was motivated by a desire to protect her family and interests, rather than a purely villainous intent.
In a separate conversation, Tropper discussed his experience working on ‘Star Wars: Starfighter,’ which he described as a ‘simpler movie’ that doesn’t rely on the rich mythology of the Star Wars universe. He stated that the film’s focus on character development and relationships makes it more accessible to new fans and viewers.
Tropper also shared that Ryan Gosling’s voice and cadence were a significant source of inspiration for him while writing the film. He mentioned that Gosling’s offhand comments and expressions often made their way into the script, and that his voice would frequently ‘get in his head’ when writing.
Tropper revealed that he wrote the screenplay for ‘Starfighter’ while show-running his own series, ‘Your Friends & Neighbors,’ and that the experience was unique in that the below-the-line departments were actively contributing to the creative process. He noted that every aspect of a Star Wars film, from set design to visual effects, requires a high level of collaboration and input from the various departments.
Tropper also touched on his upcoming project, the reboot of the Marvel film ‘Ghost Rider,’ which is set to release in July 2028. He expressed his gratitude for the opportunity and acknowledged that it was a testament to his previous work with Shawn Levy and Ryan Gosling.
Tropper’s nomination for an Emmy in Outstanding Drama Series for ‘Your Friends & Neighbors’ this year is a testament to his talent and dedication to his craft.
