As the scorching summer heat wave in London began to take its toll, I found myself yearning for a refreshing escape to the picturesque Algarve coast. The idea of trading in the haze for a vibrant orange grove and blooming bougainvillaea was too enticing to resist. I convinced my family to join me on a long weekend adventure, and we soon found ourselves standing in front of the breathtaking Red Chalet, a grandiose Airbnb villa that would become our home for the next 48 hours.

The Red Chalet’s beautifully bright orange groves and blooming bougainvillaea immediately sparked a sense of joy and anticipation among our group. Swallows, the country’s most beloved and recognizable birds, darted past us intermittently, serving as a gentle reminder of our location on this special stretch of the Algarve. As we made our way through the wrought-iron gate, we were greeted by the historic church square of Nossa Senhora dos Navegantes, where locals and tourists alike lounged under colorful umbrellas, basking in the warm sunshine.

The house itself was a true masterpiece, standing tall and proud as it overlooked the ocean. Its grandiose details and elegant architecture were a testament to its rich history, dating back to 1908. Despite a full renovation, elements of its original architecture remained, giving the Red Chalet a unique and timeless charm. We were warmly welcomed by our concierge, a friendly local who was well-versed in hosting families at the property. He showed us around the villa, pointing out its many impressive features, including the large wraparound terrace, the smaller beach house property with two further bedrooms, and the full alfresco dining setup with an outdoor barbecue and sauna.

The interior of the Red Chalet was just as impressive as its exterior. Glass swing doors and plush velvet sofas set the scene, while the bright, beautifully decorated kitchen and family dining room were a dream come true. The herb-filled paneling on the window, which overlooked the palms and sea, was a particularly lovely touch. We were thrilled to discover that the villa had two bedrooms, or ‘wings,’ at the top of a winding staircase, each with walk-in closets and large en-suite bathrooms. The flourishes throughout the villa were eclectic and charming, including octopus lamps, tiger scatter cushions, bird cage hangings, and vintage Louis Vuitton chests.
As the sun began to set, we ventured along the promenade, where we discovered N’Ice Cream, a delightful two-minute walk away. We indulged in gelato stacked on crisp waffle cones, and sampled local cuisine at nearby restaurants and cafés. But the highlight of our stay was the private chef who came to prepare a spread of traditional and local cuisine, which we paired with wine from the Vila Vita Parc hotel next door. We chatted and laughed as we sipped on white wine, nibbled olives from the Vila Vita grove, and slurped down fresh-caught oysters before tucking into the coastal delicacy of Arroz de Marisco.
As we sat on the beach, watching the sunset behind the skyline, we knew that this was a family home that had truly stood the test of time. The Red Chalet was more than just a holiday rental – it was a haven, a sanctuary, and a place where memories were made. And as we reluctantly said goodbye to this beautiful villa and the Algarve coast, we knew that we would return again someday, eager to experience the magic of the Red Chalet once more.
The Red Chalet is a true gem, offering a unique blend of history, luxury, and natural beauty. Its grandiose details, elegant architecture, and stunning location make it the perfect choice for families, couples, and solo travelers alike. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing getaway or an action-packed adventure, the Red Chalet has something for everyone. So why not start planning your dream getaway today and experience the magic of the Red Chalet for yourself?
