Fifa has initiated disciplinary proceedings against the Argentinian Football Association following several incidents during the 2026 World Cup. The first issue at hand is the display of a banner by several Argentinian players after their semi-final victory over England in Atlanta. The banner, which read ‘Las Malvinas son Argentinas,’ sparked controversy due to its reference to the disputed Falkland Islands territory.

The Falkland Islands, also known as Las Malvinas in Spanish, have been a point of contention between Argentina and the United Kingdom since 1833. The conflict escalated in 1982, resulting in a 74-day war that claimed the lives of over 900 people, including 649 Argentinians and 255 Britons.
Fifa’s disciplinary code prohibits the use of sports events for non-sporting demonstrations, and the banner displayed by the Argentinian players has prompted a heated debate on both sides of the Atlantic. The incident is not the first of its kind, as Argentina’s team was previously fined £20,000 in 2014 for displaying a similar banner before a friendly match with Slovenia.
Additionally, Fifa has charged the Argentinian Football Association with several other infractions, including discriminatory chants and gestures, late kick-offs, failure to comply with match and security protocols, and the display of inappropriate messages by the team and spectators. Several players are also under investigation for their involvement in the chaotic scenes that followed Argentina’s 1-0 extra-time defeat by Spain in the final.
Leandro Paredes, an Argentinian midfielder, faces three counts of assault under the Fifa disciplinary code, while Nahuel Molina, a defender, is charged with two counts of assault and one count of unsporting behavior. The assistant coach, Roberto Ayala, and the unused substitute, Thiago Almada, also face charges. Spain’s Gavi has been accused of unsporting behavior.
Fifa has stated that the respondents have been given the opportunity to present their position, and a decision will be issued by the Fifa disciplinary committee in due course. The World Cup 2026 has been marred by controversy, with football politics playing a significant role in the tournament.
