American Mountain Climber Mallory Geis’s Remains Found After Weeks of Search
Tragedy struck in the Himalayas as a search team discovered the remains of American climber Mallory Geis, the last missing member of a 10-member international team killed in an avalanche on Broad Peak. The team, led by renowned climber Nirmal Purja, was swept away by the avalanche on July 31.
Search Teams’ Efforts
A team made up of local volunteers, led by Irfan Arshad Khan, president of the Alpine Club of Pakistan, found Geis’s remains on Friday. The search operation, which began on July 31, was a grueling task due to the remote location and harsh weather conditions.
About Mallory Geis
Mallory Geis, a 39-year-old climber from San Antonio, Texas, was an experienced mountaineer who had been training for years to tackle the world’s highest peaks. Her family remembered her as a bright light who was loved deeply by her family and friends.
Geis had announced on social media earlier this year that she was taking a break from her Pilates studio to pursue her passion for climbing. Her family released a statement earlier this month, describing her as a free spirit who was always chasing her dreams.
About the Expedition
The 10-member international team, led by Nirmal Purja, was on a mission to climb Broad Peak, an 8,051-meter peak in the Karakoram range. Purja, a Nepal-born former British Army soldier, is known for his record-breaking climb of the world’s 14 highest peaks in 189 days in 2019. His record was broken in 2023.
The team’s expedition was not without risks, as accidents are common on climbing expeditions in northern Pakistan due to avalanches, falling ice and rock, high altitude, and rapidly changing weather.
Recovery Operation
The recovery of Geis’s remains marked the end of a long and arduous search operation. The team’s efforts were a testament to their dedication and perseverance in the face of adversity.
