Yankees Slugger Giancarlo Stanton Suffers Another Calf Injury, Could Be Out for Season
Giancarlo Stanton’s Injury Woes Continue
The New York Yankees may be without Giancarlo Stanton for the remainder of the season due to a left calf strain he suffered while running the bases during his rehabilitation work earlier this week. This injury is the latest in a series of setbacks for the 36-year-old slugger, who has been dealing with calf issues since April 24.
According to manager Aaron Boone, Stanton strained his left calf while running a couple of days ago, causing him to fall and exacerbating the injury. The severity of the strain is moderate, but it may keep him out of action for the rest of the year.
Stanton’s injury history has been a concern for the Yankees, with lower-body soft tissue injuries limiting him to just 606 of 1,160 regular-season games since 2019. He has played in 24 games this season before his initial calf injury, and last year, he played in 77 games, hitting .273/.350/.594 with 24 home runs.
When healthy, Stanton is typically a force to be reckoned with, but his recurring injuries have made it challenging for him to maintain a consistent presence in the lineup. The Yankees added Luis García Jr. and Heliot Ramos at the trade deadline to lengthen the lineup, and it’s possible that Stanton would have been relegated to a platoon role at DH and pinch-hitting duties against lefties in the late innings if he had rejoined the team this season.
This year’s ongoing calf issues likely rule out any chance at Stanton joining the 500 home run club, as he is the active leader with 456 home runs. Next season is the final year of his then-record 13-year, $325 million contract.
While Stanton’s injury is a significant blow to the Yankees, the team has won five straight games and is 73-55 on the season, three games behind the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East and comfortably in the top wild card spot. The team’s offense has been one of the lowest-scoring in baseball since Aaron Judge’s injury, but they have managed to stay afloat due to their strong pitching and defense.
In related news, Cody Bellinger is set to return from the injured list on Sunday after missing a month with a hamstring strain, and Aaron Judge is working his way back from a broken rib, with a mid-September return at the earliest. The Yankees are also without third baseman Ryan McMahon, who has a thumb sprain.
A Hypothetical Yankees Lineup
Here’s a hypothetical Yankees lineup with everyone but Stanton healthy:
- CF: Trent Grisham, LHB, and Heliot Ramos, RHB
- DH: Ben Rice, LHB
- RF: Aaron Judge, LHB
- LF: Cody Bellinger, LHB (CF when Ramos plays)
- 1B: Luis García Jr., LHB
- 2B: Jazz Chisholm Jr., LHB, and José Caballero, RHB
- SS: George Lombard Jr., RHB
- 3B: Ryan McMahon, LHB, and Amed Rosario, RHB
- C: Austin Wells, LHB, and Ali Sánchez, RHB
Until Judge returns, Spencer Jones will play regularly in the outfield, and it’s possible he’ll play regularly even after Judge returns. The performance of Caballero, Jones, and Ramos will determine their everyday status.
The Yankees’ current winning streak and strong performance in the wild card spot make their chances of making the postseason look promising, despite the challenges posed by Stanton’s injury and other absences.
Other Injuries Affecting the Yankees
Aside from Stanton’s calf strain, the Yankees are dealing with other injuries, including Cody Bellinger’s hamstring strain, Aaron Judge’s broken rib, and Ryan McMahon’s thumb sprain. The team’s ability to navigate these challenges and stay competitive will be crucial in the coming weeks.
