Dodgers President Stan Kasten Denies Team Sale Amid Mark Walter’s Troubling Business Ventures
Speculation has been rife regarding the future of the Los Angeles Dodgers, with owner Mark Walter, CEO of Guggenheim Partners, facing intense scrutiny from federal prosecutors and the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regarding potential loan fraud. Additionally, Walter is being investigated for his role as CEO of TWG Global, a diversified holding company.
In a recent statement, Dodgers president Stan Kasten attempted to quell concerns about the team’s future, firmly asserting that the Dodgers are ‘not for sale.’ Kasten’s statement comes in the wake of Walter’s decision to sell the Los Angeles Lakers for $12.5 billion, just a year after purchasing the team for $10 billion.
‘The Dodgers are not being sold. They’re not for sale. There’s no process that has been started to sell it, period,’ Kasten said during a recent interview with the Associated Press. ‘We are planning only to win.’
Kasten emphasized the importance of the Dodgers to Walter, stating, ‘I can’t tell you how important the Dodgers are to Mark. The Lakers thing? The Lakers were important to him too, but it’s kind of an extraordinary opportunity, which he took.’
Walter’s recent business dealings have raised concerns about his commitment to the Dodgers. The team’s star player, Shohei Ohtani, has a contract that includes a ‘key man’ clause, allowing him to opt out and become a free agent if Walter or Andrew Friedman, the club’s president of baseball operations, leaves the team.
Walter, 66, is based in Chicago, where Guggenheim Partners is headquartered. The company purchased the Dodgers for a then-record $2.15 billion in 2012. Under Guggenheim’s ownership, the Dodgers have achieved remarkable success, winning three World Series championships (2020, 2024-25) and two other National League pennants (2017-18).
The Los Angeles Dodgers are currently sitting comfortably at the top of the National League West standings, with a record of 78-51. They are on track to win their 13th NL West title in 14 years under Guggenheim’s ownership.
Walter’s other sports ventures, including the WNBA’s Los Angeles Sparks, the Professional Women’s Hockey League, and TWG Motorsports, do not appear to be for sale. He is cooperating with the investigations and has not been accused of any wrongdoing in connection with these ventures.
Despite the uncertainty surrounding Walter’s business dealings, Kasten remains committed to the Dodgers, stating, ‘We are planning only to win.’ The team’s fans can rest assured that the Dodgers are in good hands, with a dedicated president like Stan Kasten at the helm.
