Waymo Robotaxis Are Headed to Munich

Waymo, the autonomous vehicle company owned by Alphabet, has announced plans to launch a robotaxi service in Munich, Germany. This move comes after the company set up an entity in Germany, marking a significant step towards expanding its operations in the European market.

The launch of the robotaxi service in Munich will follow a similar pattern to Waymo’s other 11 cities with commercial robotaxi operations. The company will begin by manually driving its vehicles to map the streets of Munich, followed by testing its autonomous vehicles with human safety drivers behind the wheel. Once the testing phase is complete, Waymo will open its robotaxis to limited service and eventually to all riders once it receives the necessary regulatory approval.

Waymo is working closely with Germany’s Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), state authorities, and local officials to ensure a smooth launch. The company expects to open commercial ride-hailing services to the public by the end of 2027.

A History of Innovation in Germany

Germany has been at the forefront of autonomous vehicle development, with lawmakers adopting legislation to allow driverless vehicles on public roads more than five years ago. This made Germany the first country in the European Union to create a legal framework for Level 4 autonomous driving.

Level 4 autonomy means that the self-driving system handles all the driving, with no expectation of a human taking over, in certain conditions or environments. Several companies, including Mobileye and Volkswagen, hold permits to test their autonomous vehicles in Germany, while Waymo does not currently have any permits.

However, Waymo is not the only player in the autonomous vehicle market. The UK, particularly London, is also shaping up as a key battleground for AV developers. Waymo has announced plans to launch a commercial service in London in 2026, which will pit it against Wayve and its partner Uber. Chinese tech giant Baidu has also started testing autonomous vehicles in the city as part of its partnership with Lyft and Freenow.
