Mason Thames and McKenna Grace Reveal Romantic Connection in Green Day-Inspired Movie Nimrods

Nearly a year after they first appeared onscreen together in Colleen Hoover’s Regretting You, Mason Thames and McKenna Grace are playing romantic opposites again in the Green Day-inspired movie Nimrods.

Following the movie’s premiere last October, Thames recently revealed that he and Grace had already worked together on the film before starring in Regretting You. In an interview with People, Thames explained that the coincidence of working together on two back-to-back projects was ‘awesome’ and that he and Grace ‘love it.’

A Romantic Road Trip

Nimrods is a Green Day-inspired movie that follows the story of Tommy (Thames), a young musician who receives a call inviting him and his band Analog Dogs to open for Green Day on New Year’s Eve in Los Angeles. Not realizing it’s his older brother Wayne (Keen Ruffalo) pulling an elaborate prank, Tommy steals Wayne’s car and sets off on a cross-country road trip from Kansas City with his bandmates Fred (Kylr Coffman) and Chad (Ryan Foust).

Along the way, Tommy meets fellow punk Olivia (Grace) and strikes up a flirtation after seeing her perform live. Both Thames and Grace appear on the movie’s soundtrack, which features songs written by Billie Joe Armstrong’s son, Jakob.

‘I mean, those kids are fantastic. They can do anything,’ raved co-writer/director Lee Kirk. ‘And they’re the nicest kids, creative kids, very eager. They were up for whatever we wanted to do.’

A Special Bond

Thames and Grace’s real-life connection is evident in their on-screen chemistry, and they are open to working together again in the future. ‘If we were ever going to do another job together, we’d want it to be so special and so awesome, so whenever that moment arises, we’re going to snatch it up,’ said Thames.

The movie’s soundtrack features original songs by Analog Dogs, which were written by Jakob Armstrong. The movie also features a cameo appearance by Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong.
