ABC Revival ‘Scrubs’ Welcomes New Cast Member

Former Saturday Night Live writer and performer John Higgins has joined the cast of ABC’s ‘Scrubs’ revival for a major recurring role in the upcoming second season. The news was revealed at D23’s ‘Scrubs: Scrubbing Back’ panel, moderated by Scott Foley, who is set to return to the show next season as Sean Kelly.

Higgins will play the role of Grant, the new Chief Resident, who is envisioned as a thorn in J.D.’s side, much like Dr. Cox was in the past. This new addition is expected to bring fresh dynamics to the show.

Donald Faison, who plays Christopher Turk, alluded to the casting at the D23 panel and expressed his enthusiasm for working with Higgins and Ava Bunn, who plays Tosh. Bunn has been promoted from recurring to series regular in Season 2, alongside Braff, Faison, and Chalke.

Higgins joins fellow Season 2 recurring cast addition Keyla Monterroso Mejia as surgical nurse Mimi. Not returning for the new season are Season 1 recurring players X Mayo as nurse Raymond and Joel Kim Booster as scheming attending physician and J.D. rival Dr. Kevin Park.

The original series’ creator Bill Lawrence serves as executive producer on the revival via his Doozer Productions, alongside Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer, as well as showrunner Aseem Batra and stars Braff, Faison, and Chalke. ‘Scrubs’ is produced by 20th Television, a part of Disney Television Studios. The series will return to ABC on Wednesdays, September 30, and stream next day on Hulu.

Before joining the ‘Scrubs’ revival, Higgins was a member of the Please Don’t Destroy comedy group and co-wrote and executive produced Universal’s 2023 feature film ‘Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure Of Foggy Mountain.’ He has also been working on the Netflix film ‘Bad Day’ and a recurring role on Season 2 of Apple TV’s comedy series ‘Stick,’ starring and executive produced by Owen Wilson.

Higgins’ addition to the ‘Scrubs’ cast marks an exciting new chapter in the show’s revival. Fans of the original series can look forward to seeing how Higgins’ character will shake things up in the upcoming season.
