Director Kevin Macdonald Captures the Unpredictable World of Pep Guardiola in Prime Video’s ‘A Beautiful Obsession’
Prime Video’s ‘A Beautiful Obsession’: A Glimpse into the Life of Football’s Most Fascinating Manager
Acclaimed director Kevin Macdonald has spent two years chronicling the life of Pep Guardiola, the enigmatic Spanish football manager, in Prime Video’s highly anticipated docuseries, ‘A Beautiful Obsession.’
Guardiola, known for his unorthodox tactics and unparalleled success, has become a global phenomenon in the world of football. Macdonald’s film offers an unprecedented look into the life of the 55-year-old manager, delving into his personal struggles, his relationships with players, and his unwavering dedication to the sport.
‘Pep playing himself is a bit like having Robert De Niro play a football coach,’ Macdonald explained in an interview with Deadline. The director’s lack of interest in soccer proved to be an advantage when following one of the greatest managers of all time.
Macdonald’s disinterest in the UK’s national sport echoes that of Fisher Stevens, who directed Netflix’s smash hit Beckham documentary several years back. Stevens has also said in the past that he didn’t know much about soccer when he took up the gig.
The docuseries charts Guardiola’s tumultuous final two seasons at Manchester City, following the team’s English record four Premier League titles in a row. Macdonald spent hours observing with the legendary Spanish coach, met him five times, and interviewed him three times. The director aimed to create a series that was emotional and human, and saw these players go through really dramatic events.
‘We tried to make a series that was emotional and human, and saw these players go through really dramatic events,’ Macdonald said. ‘I hope the series will be enjoyed by people who aren’t football fans, but are just interested in the human drama.’
The docuseries explores the highs and lows of Guardiola’s tenure at Manchester City, including the team’s dramatic collapse in the first few months of the period being covered. The team’s struggles created ‘authenticity and honesty,’ which contrasts with the ‘first wave’ of popular streaming sports docs from a few years back that ‘were quite constructed and quite limited’ in scope.
City Studios’ deep access comes from its unique position as an in-house Manchester City studio, chronicling the team all-year round. ‘The team we’ve built at City haven’t shied away from any area but have done a wonderful job to build trust, catch all of the content and work within the parameters we have to work within,’ said Gavin Johnson, Group Media Director at City Football Group.
Macdonald believes that the docuseries will be enjoyed by people who aren’t football fans, but are just interested in the human drama. He added, ‘There’s something quite good about asking stupid questions.’ The director’s approach allowed him to get under Guardiola’s skin and create a series that is both authentic and captivating.
‘He wears his heart on his sleeve,’ Macdonald said of Guardiola. ‘He’s just so compelling to watch.’
The docuseries is directed by Macdonald alongside City Studios’ John De Caux and produced by Macdonald for Plan B/KM Films and Banijay UK-owned Workerbee, along with Johnson and Ged Doherty for City Studios.
‘A Beautiful Obsession’ launches on August 19, offering a unique glimpse into the life of one of the most fascinating figures in football.
