Alphabet’s Historic Bond Sale in Australia

Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, has made a significant move in the global debt market by raising A$5.5 billion ($3.89 billion) in its first Australian dollar bond sale. This move is a part of the company’s efforts to tap global debt markets amid an AI investment boom.

According to a term sheet seen by Reuters, investors submitted more than A$18 billion ($12.8 billion) of orders, which is over three times the amount sold. This shows the high demand for Alphabet’s bonds, which has led to a successful bond sale for the company.

First AI Hyperscaler in Australia

Alphabet has become the first AI hyperscaler to tap the Australian-dollar debt market. This milestone is significant as it marks a new chapter in the company’s financial history. The company’s ability to raise funds in the Australian market is a testament to its growing influence in the global economy.

The Australian sale follows a $25 billion U.S. dollar bond raise earlier this month and an almost $85 billion equity capital raise in June. This demonstrates Alphabet’s commitment to expanding its debt portfolio and meeting its financial goals.

AI Buildout Pushes Alphabet into Negative Cash Flow

Alphabet’s AI spending is growing at an unprecedented rate, pushing the company into negative cash flow. The company’s 2026 capital expenditure forecast has been raised to between $195 billion and $205 billion, up from $180 billion to $190 billion. This significant increase in spending is expected to continue in 2027.

In the second quarter, Alphabet burned $5.9 billion and reported negative free cash flow for the first time in its history. Operating cash flow of $39.1 billion fell short of $44.9 billion in capital spending. Despite this, Alphabet is still producing enormous amounts of cash, with its AI spending growing faster than its cash generation.

Why Bond Investors Keep Saying Yes

The demand for Alphabet’s bonds may be attributed to the company’s growing revenue from its Google Cloud unit. In the second quarter, Google Cloud revenue jumped 82% to $24.8 billion, while the unit’s operating income more than tripled to $8.8 billion. The company’s cloud backlog reached $514 billion, up more than $50 billion from the prior quarter.

The supply constraint in the cloud market may be driving the high demand for Alphabet’s bonds. Credit investors appear to be willing to finance the company’s AI buildout, which is expected to continue growing in the coming years.

Prediction Markets Less Convinced

Despite Alphabet’s ability to raise funds for its AI buildout, prediction markets are less convinced that spending will translate into near-term leadership. Polymarket traders give Google’s next Gemini Pro model a 10% chance of being released by Aug. 31, with roughly $298,000 traded on that contract.

Alphabet’s competitors, such as Anthropic, are also making significant strides in the AI market. Polymarket gives Anthropic’s Claude a 67% chance of having the best AI model at the end of the year, while Google is in fourth place at 7%.
