As I sit here, reflecting on the past 41 years of my life, I am reminded of the incredible journey I’ve been on. A journey that has taken me through the highs and lows of mental health, relationships, and self-discovery.

For many of us, therapy is often viewed as a sign of weakness or a last resort. However, for me, it has been a beacon of hope, a guiding light that has helped me navigate the darkest of times. Over the past four decades, I’ve had the privilege of working with 14 incredible therapists, each of whom has played a vital role in shaping my mental well-being.
From the early days of struggling with disordered eating, anxiety, depression, and suicidal ideation, to the later years of grappling with psychosis and bipolar disorder, I’ve been fortunate to have had access to a wide range of professionals who have helped me find the tools and strategies I needed to build a life worth living.
Of course, there have been times when I’ve felt like I was stuck, like I was relying too heavily on therapy. But the truth is, therapy has been a constant companion on my journey, a reminder that I am not alone and that there is always hope for healing and growth.
As I look back on my 41 years of therapy, I am struck by the realization that it has not been a dependency, but a lifeline. A lifeline that has helped me shift from crisis survival to wellness maintenance, from mere existence to a life of purpose and meaning.
One of the most significant takeaways from my experience with therapy has been the importance of self-management strategies. Learning how to manage my mental health, how to recognize the warning signs of a potential crisis, and how to develop coping mechanisms that work for me has been a game-changer.
It’s not just about finding the right therapist or medication; it’s about taking ownership of my mental health, being proactive, and making choices that support my well-being. This is what has allowed me to move from surviving to thriving, to finding freedom in the midst of chaos.
Of course, this journey has not been without its challenges. There have been times when I’ve felt like giving up, when the pain and the struggle seemed too much to bear. But it’s precisely in those moments that I’ve been reminded of the power of therapy, of the importance of seeking help and support when I need it most.
As I look to the future, I am filled with a sense of hope and possibility. I know that I will continue to face challenges, but I also know that I have the tools and the support to navigate them. And that, my friends, is the greatest freedom of all.
