Tragedy Strikes Artisanal Gold Mining Site

A devastating gold mine collapse in the western part of the Central African Republic has claimed the lives of at least 30 miners, leaving many others trapped and injured. The accident occurred on Tuesday morning in the Abba region of the Nana-Mambere prefecture.

According to Florian Gaguende, one of the surviving miners, rescuers were racing against time to locate additional miners believed to be trapped, but the chances of finding them alive were rapidly dwindling. The low-tech, artisanal mine, where several thousand people work in small-scale extraction mining, is notorious for its risks due to inadequate protection and frequent deadly accidents.

The sub-prefecture’s deputy mayor, Souleymane Bi, confirmed that over several hours, rescuers and residents managed to pull 30 bodies from the collapsed mine, with injured miners receiving treatment. The deputy mayor expressed his sympathy for the families of the victims, stating, ‘It is horrible, and we are calling for help from organizations and all people of good will to help pull from the hole those who are unable to do so.’

Rescue Efforts Underway

Footage from the scene captured the chaotic rescue efforts, with miners, mostly young men and women, covered in mud, seen pulling out a body from the pit while dozens of other miners and workers were scattered around the expansive site, some shouting for help. Government spokesman Evariste Ngamana sympathized with the families of the victims and assured that authorities are working tirelessly to provide relief and assistance to those affected.
