Google has rolled out a new AI‑powered feature inside Google Photos that transforms pictures of your outfits into a digital wardrobe, a concept directly inspired by Cher’s iconic virtual closet from the 1995 film Clueless. The feature, first announced earlier this year, began a phased release in June for Android users and has now expanded to include iOS devices in the United States, Brazil, and India.

Using on‑device machine learning, the app scans your photo library for images where clothing items are visible. It then creates a searchable copy of each garment, allowing you to browse your wardrobe without opening a physical closet. From the interface you can filter items by category such as tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear, shoes, bags, jewelry, and accessories. Once filtered, you can drag and drop pieces together to experiment with new combinations, effectively mixing and matching outfits in a virtual space.

The experience mirrors the playful interface seen in Clueless, where a touch‑screen wardrobe helped the protagonist pick the perfect look for any occasion. Google emphasizes that the tool is meant to be a personal styling assistant, not a shopping platform, and that the AI processes images locally whenever possible to keep your data private.

Android users were the first to gain access, receiving the feature in June 2024. Following positive feedback and stability testing, Google opened the virtual closet to iOS users in the same supported markets starting in late July. The rollout covers all major smartphones running the latest versions of Google Photos, provided the app is updated to the current release.
Google explicitly states that the data describing what you wear or how you style your outfits is not shared with third parties, including retailers or advertising partners. The company says the feature is designed to assist the user only, and any images used to build the virtual wardrobe remain under your control within the Photos ecosystem.
The virtual closet launch coincides with several other enhancements to Google Photos:
These updates collectively aim to make photo management more intuitive, creative, and secure for everyday users.
By turning your existing photo library into a personalized fashion catalogue, Google Photos bridges the gap between casual snapshots and practical wardrobe planning. The feature democratizes a capability once reserved for fictional, affluent characters, giving anyone with a smartphone the ability to visualize, organize, and experiment with their clothing choices—all without leaving the Photos app.
