Hawaii on High Alert as Tropical Storm Moke Draws Near

Hawaii is preparing for a potentially devastating encounter with Tropical Storm Moke, which is expected to bring heavy rain, life-threatening flooding, and mudslides to the ‘Big Island.’

As of 7 p.m. Saturday Eastern time, Moke was located approximately 425 miles southeast of Hilo, Hawaii, and was continuing to move to the west-northwest at a speed of around 11.5 miles per hour.

According to the National Weather Service in Honolulu, Moke’s center is expected to pass well south of the Hawaiian Islands, but flash flooding caused by excessive rainfall is still deemed likely for windward and southeast Big Island.

Forecasters have warned of rainfall totals ranging from 5 to 10 inches, with maximum amounts of up to 15 inches expected on Hawaii Island. This comes at a time when the state is still recovering from the catastrophic flooding and debris flows left behind by Hurricane Lala last weekend.

‘Although the strongest winds associated with Moke are expected to pass south of the Hawaiian Islands, strong gusty winds are likely, particularly in areas within and downslope of higher terrain,’ the NWS warned.

Forecasters predict that Moke will reach its peak on Saturday and then begin weakening on Sunday, with this trend continuing into next week. In addition, swells generated by the storm are expected to produce elevated surf near exposed east and south-facing shores of the Hawaiian Islands through early next week.

Hawaii Governor Josh Green has authorized the use of 100 hotel rooms for people to be away from the affected region as needed. The Department of Human Services will accommodate those in need, and Green has been in contact with federal officials in an effort to receive an emergency declaration.

Green emphasized the significant damage already caused by Hurricane Lala, stating, ‘We know there’s already at least $43 million of damaged infrastructure on the Big Island, another $4.6 million to homes, at the very least.’ He cautioned that there will be a lot more to account for, and the state will be there to provide recovery and resources, but it will take time.

Residents and visitors alike are advised to remain vigilant and stay informed about the latest updates and advisories from the National Weather Service. The state’s emergency response teams are working tirelessly to prepare for and respond to the potential impacts of Tropical Storm Moke.

In the face of this unfolding crisis, it is crucial for everyone to prioritize their safety and the well-being of those around them.

Preparation and Response Efforts Underway

The state’s emergency management officials are working closely with local authorities, utility companies, and other stakeholders to ensure a coordinated response to the potential impacts of Tropical Storm Moke.

Residents are advised to stock up on essential supplies, including food, water, and medications, and to have a plan in place in case of an evacuation. Visitors are encouraged to check with their accommodations providers for any updates on their stay and to follow local news and advisories.

The National Weather Service will continue to provide updates and forecasts on Tropical Storm Moke’s trajectory and potential impacts. Residents and visitors are urged to stay informed and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
