The passenger bus, carrying a group of Polish tourists, was traveling on the eastbound lanes of the M3 motorway near the town of Mezokeresztes when it veered off the road and into a ditch, where it overturned.

The accident occurred around 1 a.m. on Sunday, approximately 87 miles east of Hungary’s capital, Budapest.

According to the Hungarian National Directorate for Disaster Management, 57 passengers and two drivers were on board the bus at the time of the accident.

The bus was carrying people from Poland’s southeastern Podkarpackie region who were returning from a pilgrimage in Bosnia-Herzegovina.

The driver of the bus has been taken into custody, with police stating that it is likely that the driver fell asleep, causing the accident.

Hungary’s Prime Minister Péter Magyar expressed his condolences to the families of the victims and thanked rescue workers who were dispatched to the scene.
