Israel Strikes Lebanon, Killing 15; 3 Israelis Injured in Escalating Conflict
Escalating Conflict Between Israel and Lebanon Leaves Multiple Casualties
On August 15, two Israeli strikes hit Lebanon, resulting in the deaths of at least 15 people, including civilians and a Hezbollah commander. The strikes targeted areas in the Ansar region near the city of Nabatieh and Deir al-Zahrani, with the Lebanese health ministry confirming the fatalities.
The Israeli military stated that the Ansar strikes aimed to target Hezbollah infrastructure. However, the Israeli military spokesperson’s unit later acknowledged that civilians were unintentionally killed in the strike, including several Hezbollah terrorists, including Ali Samir Al-Haj Hassan, a battalion commander in Hezbollah’s Radwan Force unit. Notably, Hassan’s family was with him at the time of the strike.
Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam strongly condemned the escalation, labeling it ‘extremely dangerous.’ He emphasized that the Lebanese government holds the responsibility for dealing with any military targets on its land, and that Israel’s actions are not justified by any circumstances.
Background and Context
The Israeli-Hezbollah conflict has been ongoing for years, with the two sides frequently engaging in military confrontations. The recent escalation is believed to have been triggered by a Hezbollah attack on Israeli soldiers in the security zone, which seriously injured three Israeli soldiers.
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office stated that the country’s military targeted the ‘headquarters which ordered the attack’ on Israel, only later learning that Hezbollah had deliberately placed civilians in the military compound. Four people were killed, and five were injured in the second strike.
The current conflict is taking place against the backdrop of a cease-fire agreement signed between Israel and Lebanon on June 26. However, Hezbollah rejected the truce, and some strikes have continued since then.
In a televised speech on Friday, Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem condemned the Israeli strikes, stating that they demonstrate the futility of negotiating with Israel. He warned that such negotiations would only bring shame and disgrace to the Lebanese people.
