Mass Migration Attempt Foiled in Spain’s Ceuta

Several hundred migrants, primarily from sub-Saharan Africa, have been arrested by Moroccan security forces while attempting to cross into Spain’s Ceuta enclave, a strategic and disputed territory on the northern coast of Morocco.

According to Moroccan state television, 294 migrants were arrested on Saturday while attempting to enter Ceuta, while 61 Moroccans were also detained for allegedly facilitating the migration attempts. The arrests were carried out by Moroccan security forces, who have increased their presence along the border in response to the calls for a new mass crossing.

Tighter Security Measures

The authorities have responded to the surge in migration attempts by beefing up security along the border and limiting movement toward the area. This includes deploying thousands of Moroccan security personnel each day, with a senior diplomat estimating that more than 20,000 personnel are involved in the effort, at a cost of hundreds of millions of dollars.
