The early hours of August 5 witnessed a significant event in space history when the upper stage of a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket crashed into the lunar surface. The incident has been extensively documented by NASA through a series of images captured by the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) from August 11 to 12.

The LRO, which is a highly advanced spacecraft designed to study the Moon’s surface, played a crucial role in capturing the images of the crater. NASA engineers had to employ a clever technique to capture the images, tilting the spacecraft sideways so that its cameras could point downward as it passed 60 miles above the crater. The Narrow-Angle Camera on the LRO was specifically used for this purpose, as it is capable of detecting features on the lunar surface as small as three feet wide.
The process of capturing the images was not without its challenges. The LRO is required to fly from pole to pole every two hours at a speed of 1 mile per second, while the Moon rotates on its axis underneath. NASA had to wait for the LRO and the crash site to align, which took six days. However, the agency did release before-and-after photos, which provide a clear comparison of the crater before and after the crash.
The images show the crash site from different angles, revealing the extent of the damage caused by the Falcon 9 rocket. The darker streak radiating out of the crater is made of older materials from near the surface, which have been altered by years of exposure to solar winds and cosmic rays. On the other hand, the lighter materials near the rim of the crater came from deeper underground.
Independent astronomer Bill Grey first drew attention to a rocket on a collision course with the Moon in April. Using orbit-computing software, he determined the location and time of the crash. Grey and his colleagues also used a physics simulator to analyze the data, predicting that the upper stage of the rocket would not make much of an impact. However, the reality was far different, and the rocket slammed into the Moon at 5,400 mph, creating a crater 60 feet wide and 12 feet deep.
The Falcon 9 rocket in this crash came from the January 15, 2025 Blue Ghost mission, which carried two lunar landers to orbit. The rocket used most of its fuel to bring the landers to their intended orbit, so it couldn’t make its way back to Earth. Instead, gravity and solar activity brought it to the Moon, resulting in the catastrophic crash.
The incident serves as a reminder of the complexities and risks involved in space exploration. Despite the challenges, NASA’s efforts to capture images of the crater demonstrate the agency’s commitment to understanding and documenting the Moon’s surface.
