OpenAI has introduced a new version of its popular chatbot, ChatGPT, specifically designed for teenagers. The company has implemented various safety measures to protect young users from potentially hazardous content. This new mode, dubbed ChatGPT for Teens, is aimed at providing a safer experience for users under the age of 18.

According to OpenAI, ChatGPT for Teens is a ‘safety-first’ mode that treats teenagers like, well, teenagers. The company has emphasized that the default experience for teen users will include various protections, ensuring that they are shielded from content that may be harmful or developmentally inappropriate. This includes exposure to topics such as self-harm, violence, eating disorders, explicit sexual or graphic content, and those related to dangerous activities.
The chatbot’s ‘Model Spec,’ a set of rules built into the chatbot that guide its behavior, has been updated to keep teenagers away from sensitive topic areas. Additionally, new users are required to disclose their age upon signing up, with a minimum age requirement of 13 years old. However, it is worth noting that users under 13 may still be able to bypass this restriction.
OpenAI has faced criticism and lawsuits worldwide regarding the potential dangers its platform poses to children. The company has been accused of misrepresenting its safety measures to protect minors on its platform. In response, OpenAI has taken steps to address these concerns and ensure a safer experience for young users.
ChatGPT for Teens introduces a new feature called Study Mode, which is designed to assist teenagers in studying and learning. This feature provides guided questions, scaffolding, metacognitive prompts, and knowledge checks to help students work through problems step by step instead of simply receiving a solution. The Study Mode is built with the help of teachers, scientists, and pedagogy experts and draws on longstanding research in learning science.
The new mode also includes ‘responsible homework reminders,’ which can recognize when a teenager appears to be trying to shortcut an assignment. In such cases, the chatbot will redirect them toward Study Mode for step-by-step collaborative problem-solving.
OpenAI’s decision to launch ChatGPT for Teens reflects the company’s commitment to providing a safer and more responsible experience for young users. By implementing various safety measures and introducing new features, OpenAI aims to create a platform that is both engaging and secure for teenagers.
As OpenAI continues to evolve and improve its platform, it is essential to acknowledge the importance of safety and responsibility in the development of AI-powered chatbots. By prioritizing the well-being of young users, OpenAI sets a positive example for other companies in the industry.
