The series, which will be available on Prime from Wednesday, takes viewers on a journey through the tumultuous 2024-25 campaign, where the team suffered nine defeats and one victory in 13 games.

Guardiola’s decision to change 10 players for the 2-0 Champions League loss at home to Bayer Leverkusen is criticized by the club’s chair, Khaldoon al-Mubarak, who is ‘so angry’ that he can’t speak to the manager.

However, the series also shows a more personal side of Guardiola, as he talks about his divorce and how it affected his relationship with his players.

‘I’m fucking divorced from the most beautiful woman on your planet,’ he says. ‘I love her unbelievably, but we lost the passion. How do you play football, because you are paid? Or because of something inside? Where is the passion?’

The documentary also explores the theme of interpersonal relations and Guardiola’s management style, with episode three titled ‘Love and Hugs’.

One of the most striking scenes shows Guardiola in tears after Kyle Walker abandons the teetering ship in January 2025, precisely when City need their captain.

‘If captains first, then the other ones, for example [feel] that there’s a problem, tell me. It’s not going to change the love I have for all of you. I’m sorry,’ Guardiola says, as Walker silently reflects on his role in the team’s downfall.

Guardiola’s close friend and City’s director of first-team operations, Manuel Estiarte, reveals that he told the players about the divorce to help them understand why Guardiola was ‘anxious, sad, different.’

‘I said to the team: ‘Please, you have to understand, you’re not playing with a coach who can be a bit impulsive, intense, sometimes a bit up and down. You’re seeing a human being. He’s getting a divorce.’

The documentary also sheds light on the tension between Guardiola and the club hierarchy, particularly after the team’s 2-0 defeat by Juventus in the Champions League on 11 December 2024.

‘In my life I made a lot of changes – I got divorced and I have to settle a bit. But no complaints at all honestly,’ Guardiola says, before insisting he is a happy man – regarding his work.

By the end of the series, however, all seems rosy again, as City claim the Carabao Cup and FA Cup to make it 20 trophies in a decade for Guardiola, and he receives a fitting send-off before the start of the rest of his life.

‘Life should not just be about football. It’s too much to be honest,’ he says, as the series comes to a close.

A New Perspective on the Beautiful Game

The documentary series ‘A Beautiful Obsession’ offers a refreshing take on the beautiful game, delving into the personal and professional lives of Pep Guardiola and his players.

By sharing their struggles and triumphs, the series humanizes the players and coaches, showing that even in the high-pressure world of football, there is a human side to the game.

Guardiola’s Final Act of Passion

The series is a testament to Guardiola’s passion for the game, as he pours his heart and soul into every match, every decision, and every interaction with his players.

It is a reminder that, despite the glamour and glory of the beautiful game, there is a human side to it, and that even the most successful managers and players have their own struggles and challenges.
