As the 2026-27 Premier League season kicks off, the English top flight is witnessing a significant change. Nine new managers are taking charge of the teams, including the departure of Pep Guardiola from Manchester City. This shift is expected to alter the dynamics of the league.

However, despite the changes in the dugout, the storylines may remain the same. The bottom of the table looks bleak, with Coventry City, Ipswich Town, and Hull City facing relegation. The expectation is that at least two of West Ham United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Burnley will take their place.

Bridging the gap between the Championship and Premier League requires a unique combination of events. It could be a top team from the second tier making smart investments or a more ordinary playoff team making savvy moves and getting lucky breaks.

The Premier League’s middle ground is home to many top 20 or 30 teams in Europe. Brighton and Hove Albion are likely to be among the favorites to win the Conference League, while Sunderland might be placed on a comparable level to Bayer Leverkusen and AC Milan, despite their struggles against relegation.
According to Opta’s power rankings, 15 of the top 40 teams in the world by Club ELO rating come from the Premier League. This indicates a strong presence of top-tier teams in the league.
For all the strength in depth, it seems unlikely that the middle-class teams will be able to break through the glass ceiling. Aston Villa and Newcastle are still finding themselves at the mercy of their wealthier contemporaries. Crystal Palace and Nottingham Forest are notable sellers, while Ipswich and Coventry are investing heavily to avoid relegation.
Those teams will likely fight for the podium spots. However, it’s challenging to shake the sense that the first place in the 2026-27 Premier League is close to being locked off:
Arsenal is the best-looking team to have improved over the summer. Bruno Guimaraes’ arrival has turned their central midfield corps into a group that can compete with the best in Europe. The only evidence is preseason, but Christos Tzolis looks like a handy fit for Arsenal’s attack. The expectations that threatened to crush them in the spring have been replaced by the extremely bearable lightness of being champions, with the 3-0 demolition of Manchester City typifying that.
There are scenarios where Arsenal let the chasing pack eat up the ground. Many of them will revolve around the absence of William Saliba, who is out for the long term with a back injury. Ezri Konsa is a valuable addition to cover both for the Frenchman in the long term and to ease the burden on Ben White and Jurrien Timber at right back.
Manchester City is starting a new era without Pep Guardiola. Enzo Maresca is taking charge, but there is nothing in his track record at Leicester City and Chelsea to suggest he could meaningfully alter how the sport is played. The risk is that it goes that way on the pitch. While Elliot Anderson is the ideal replacement for Rodri, for whom City got a very good price, the ideal scenario would have been that the latter guides the former in his new role for at least a year.
Aggressive moves are being made in the market to replace Silva and Rodri, though a checkered record of recruitment recently does not dissuade any doubts one might have over the youthful Ayyoub Bouaddi and the temperamental Enzo Fernandez.
Chelsea is one of the teams that doesn’t look like the finished article. The shrewdest move of the off-season might be the appointment of Xabi Alonso. Though his time at Real Madrid was a challenge, the 44-year-old has the aura as both a player and title-winning coach to command immediate respect in a Stamford Bridge dressing room that did for Liam Rosenior earlier in the year.
When Chelsea play well and avoid red cards, they profile as the third-best team in the division. This summer has rounded out the quality of their squad, with Maxence Lacroix bringing pace and experience to defense. The likes of Marco Palestra, Pep Chavarria, and even Valentin Barco should allow Alonso to switch between a back three and four.
