Russian Drone and Missile Strikes Continue to Terrorize Ukraine

As the world grapples with the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, the situation on the ground remains dire. In a recent escalation, Russian drone and missile strikes have left a trail of destruction, death, and devastation in their wake.

The latest attacks, which took place overnight, resulted in the deaths of at least two people. Oleksandr Pertsovsky, the head of Ukraine’s national rail operator Ukrzaliznytsia, confirmed that one of the company’s employees was killed in an overnight ballistic missile attack on the railway in the capital Kyiv.

Russia’s Ministry of Defense claimed that its forces had hit a locomotive depot, but the reality on the ground paints a starkly different picture. In addition to the attacks on Kyiv, Russian drone strikes also killed one person overnight in Zaporizhzhia, local officials reported. The latest attacks come just a day after Russian drones struck a shopping center in the city of Kryvyi Rih in central Ukraine, resulting in the deaths of 16 people and injuring another 130.

Kryvyi Rih is the hometown of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who described the attack as a ‘double-tap strike,’ in which an initial wave of drones hit the area followed by a second wave as rescue workers responded. The city has been hit multiple times during the ongoing conflict, with one of the deadliest attacks occurring in April 2025, when 20 people were killed, including nine children.

The frequency and intensity of Russian attacks on Ukraine have increased significantly this summer, with large-scale strikes becoming a regular occurrence. Just 24 hours prior to the latest attacks, Russia pounded Kyiv with scores of missiles and drones in a nighttime assault that killed 16 people.

Ukraine has been forced to adapt to the changing landscape of the conflict, shifting the war onto Russian soil through long-range drone strikes on oil facilities that have caused fuel shortages across the country. The country has also unsettled the Russian public by striking warehouses of Wildberries, the country’s biggest online retailer.

As the conflict rages on, the human cost of the war continues to mount. The United Nations reported that Kyiv was one of the hardest-hit cities in July, with at least 54 civilians killed and 202 injured. The situation on the ground remains dire, and it is clear that the war will have far-reaching consequences for both Ukraine and Russia.
