Coordinated Violence Erupts in Southern Thailand

Thailand’s Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has faced a severe crisis in the country’s north, with widespread flooding affecting the province of Nan. However, another pressing issue has emerged in the form of coordinated violence in three southern provinces, where a small-scale Muslim insurgency has been active for decades.

The violence, which involved 51 incidents on Saturday night, took place in the southernmost provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani, and Yala. The attackers primarily targeted property, using small bombs, arson, and other forms of damage. The highest-profile target was a 7-Eleven convenience store in Pattani, which was set on fire after armed men stormed the location.

The violence also caused disruptions to local and long-haul rail services in Narathiwat, with a bomb damaging rail tracks and forcing the suspension of services. The Thai government has yet to confirm when the services will be restored due to the uncertain security situation.

Insurgent Group Blamed for Attacks

The attacks are believed to have been carried out by the Barisan Revolusi Nasional Melayu Patani (BRN), a major insurgent group in the region. The BRN has been seeking self-rule for the three southern provinces, which are the only ones with Muslim majorities in predominantly Buddhist Thailand. Muslim residents in these provinces have long complained of being treated as second-class citizens, leading to periodic outbreaks of separatist violence.

The BRN has been involved in peace talks with the Thai government, but these talks have been on-again, off-again over the years. The group’s attacks are largely seen as a means of leveraging negotiations with the government, rather than as a purely violent or terrorist tactic.

History of Insurgency in Southern Thailand

The insurgency in southern Thailand has a long and complex history, dating back to the 1960s. The violence escalated sharply in 2004, with the Thai military launching a series of crackdowns that further fueled discontent among the Muslim population. According to the Deep South Watch, a think tank based at the Prince of Songkla University’s campus in Pattani, 7,837 people have died in the violence over the past 22 years.

Recent attacks have highlighted the ongoing security concerns in the region. In July, about 10 attackers opened fire and threw pipe bombs at soldiers at a security checkpoint in Narathiwat, killing five paramilitary soldiers and wounding six civilians, including a 10-year-old boy.

Security Analyst Weighs in on BRN Tactics

Don Pathan, an independent security analyst, believes that the BRN carries out attacks largely for leverage as it negotiates with the Thai government. He notes that the group’s combatants are turned off by the boasting of military officials and want to use the spike in violence to demonstrate their capabilities.

Many of the targets in the latest incidents were civilians, but the BRN combatants were not after body counts. They want to send a stern message to the Thais of what they are capable of doing.
