For the past 15 years, revisiting the original The Fast and the Furious has been a drastic contrast to how outrageous the franchise became. However, it’s easy to see how the 2001 film, re-released in theaters this week, launched a family that fans wanted to keep revisiting.

Brian O’Conner (Paul Walker) goes undercover to infiltrate the street racing underworld in Los Angeles. The police suspect one of the racing gangs is committing mobile armed robberies to finance their racing vehicles.
Brian gets in when he races Dominic Toretto (Vin Diesel), though his crew members Vince (Matt Schulze) and Leon (Johnny Strong) don’t trust Brian. Dom certainly doesn’t like Brian hitting it off with his sister, Mia (Jordana Brewster).
The Fast and the Furious shows drivers just as much respect as Point Break did surfers. These kids have somewhere to go, something to be a part of, and a shared interest in suped-up cars.
It’s competitive, though. There are winners and losers, and often their very cars are at stake. And they are involved in illegal activity, whether it’s the truck robbers or just everyone breaking traffic laws. The outlaw life is always seductive.
Dom’s philosophy was seductive too.
