‘The Voice of Hind Rajab’ Director Slams Israeli Investigation as ‘Smokescreen’ for Palestinian Girl’s Killing
Israeli Military Investigation into Palestinian Girl’s Death Sparks Outrage
In a scathing statement, Kaouther Ben Hania, the director of the Oscar-nominated documentary ‘The Voice of Hind Rajab,’ has condemned the Israeli military’s decision to launch an investigation into the killing of 5-year-old Palestinian girl Hind Rajab. The incident, which occurred in January 2024, sparked widespread outrage after it was revealed that Israeli forces had opened fire on the car carrying Rajab and six members of her family.
Ben Hania, who used the recording of Rajab’s call to the Red Cross in her film, which won the grand jury prize in Venice and received nominations from the BAFTAs and Oscars, described the investigation as a ‘smokescreen.’
‘This announcement is a smokescreen. For more than two years, the evidence has been there: independent investigations, satellite imagery, ballistic analysis. And there was the most devastating evidence of all: Hind’s own voice, describing the Israeli tanks circling around her,’ Ben Hania wrote on her Instagram page.
‘What more did we need?’ she added. ‘Did we really have to wait for the accused to decide to investigate itself (yes, itself!) before these facts could finally be taken seriously?’
Ben Hania emphasized that the Israeli military’s actions in Gaza continue to claim Palestinian lives, while the occupation intensifies in the West Bank. She called for justice to be delivered by an independent authority, rather than a public relations operation.
‘What is needed now is not a public relations operation. What is needed is justice (delivered by an independent authority) for Hind and for all the victims of the genocide in Gaza,’ Ben Hania wrote.
The Israeli military’s investigation into the killing of Hind Rajab is widely seen as a response to international pressure and public outcry. However, many have questioned the motives behind the investigation, citing concerns about accountability and the lack of transparency in the Israeli military’s actions.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice, with many demanding an independent investigation into the killing of Hind Rajab and the actions of the Israeli military in Gaza.
