US to Send Hospital Ship to Peru Amid El Niño Threat

In a bid to assist Peru cope with the devastating effects of the El Niño climate phenomenon, the United States plans to dispatch a military hospital ship to the country’s Pacific coast in February 2027. This move comes as part of a broader collaboration between the US and Peru, with the two nations working together to address the pressing issue of climate change.

US Ambassador to Peru Bernie Navarro made the announcement following a meeting with Peruvian Foreign Minister Carlos Espá in Miami. The meeting aimed to discuss cooperation and develop a roadmap for assistance, which includes equipment, expertise, and overflights to prevent, mitigate, and respond to the El Niño phenomenon.

Espá indicated that the US has been providing humanitarian aid to Colombia and Venezuela in the aftermath of recent earthquakes. The US is also ramping up its joint military operations in the region. The aid package, however, remains undisclosed.

US Ambassador Bernie Navarro emphasized that the primary objective of the meeting was to understand Peru’s needs and provide support with a rapid response. He noted that the aid following the recent earthquake in Colombia would have been faster with better coordination.

The USNS Comfort, a military hospital ship that was previously in Peru in 2018 and 2019, will arrive in the northern Pacific coast of Peru in February 2027, coinciding with the expected peak of the El Niño phenomenon.

The El Niño climate phenomenon is characterized by a warming of the Pacific Ocean near the equator, which affects global weather patterns. According to meteorologists, it could soon equal or surpass the 1997 phenomenon, which caused significant damage from heat waves, heavy rains, floods, and forest fires.

Peruvian President Keiko Fujimori has made addressing the potentially catastrophic climate phenomenon a priority. She took office on July 28 and has emphasized the need for swift action to mitigate the effects of El Niño.

The US has been working closely with Peru to develop a comprehensive plan to address the challenges posed by the El Niño phenomenon. This includes providing equipment, expertise, and overflights to support Peru’s efforts in preventing, mitigating, and responding to the phenomenon.
