A devastating incident occurred in Carter County, Tennessee, when a vehicle drove into a cycling team from Milligan University, resulting in the deaths of two students and injuries to seven others.

The accident happened on Highway 19 near Simerly Creek Road at approximately 9 a.m. on Wednesday, August 20. Eleven members of the Milligan University cycling team were cycling when a vehicle suddenly drove into the group.

Milligan University President Steven Waers identified the deceased students as sophomores Haylan Engdahl and Brayden Rogers. The university community is in shock and mourning the loss of these two young lives.

A large number of first responders were dispatched to the scene, with two of the injured being airlifted to the hospital. Six of the injured students remain at the hospital, with four in critical condition in the surgical intensive care unit at Johnson City Medical Center. Dr. Bracken Burns, a medical official, stated that one of the patients will require additional surgeries.

Milligan University President Steven Waers expressed his grief and concern for the families of the victims. He invited the community to come together in prayer and support for those affected by the tragedy.

The suspected driver, John Benfield, 69, of Newland, N.C., has been arrested and charged with two counts of vehicle homicide by recklessness and five counts of aggravated assault by vehicle by recklessness. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are still determining whether the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the accident.

Milligan University is a small Christian college with a student body of over 1,230 students. The university is providing support and counseling services to students and staff affected by the tragedy.

In a statement, Milligan University President Steven Waers said, ‘It is more important than ever right now that we are a community gathered around Jesus and we need Jesus deeply.’ He invited the community to pray for the families of the victims and for those who are still receiving care.
