Why Paige Bueckers and Geno Auriemma Didn’t Speak for Two Weeks During UConn’s 2025 Championship Run
Paige Bueckers and Geno Auriemma’s Turbulent Relationship
The highly anticipated Apple TV documentary ‘The Dynasty: UConn Huskies’ offers a captivating look into the most successful program in college basketball history. The series delves into the complex relationship between legendary coach Geno Auriemma and his star player Paige Bueckers, shedding light on the dynamics that fueled their 2025 national championship run.
One of the most poignant moments in the documentary is the emotional hug shared between Auriemma and Bueckers at the end of the championship game. Bueckers reflected on the significance of the moment, stating, ‘That was just everything that we had been through up until that point, just the emotions of it and just everything coming together.’
However, the road to that triumphant moment was marked by tension and disagreements between Auriemma and Bueckers. After Bueckers’ historic freshman season, she faced one of her toughest mental challenges when she tore her ACL in 2022. The setback led to panic attacks and self-doubt, with Bueckers questioning whether she would ever regain her pre-injury form.
Auriemma’s coaching style, which emphasizes pushing his players to their limits, created a rift between the coach and his star player. Bueckers felt that Auriemma was being overly critical and dismissive, leading to a period where they didn’t speak to each other for weeks. The strain on their relationship was palpable, with Bueckers describing herself as ‘just showing up to practice and existing.’
But Auriemma’s tough love approach ultimately paid off, as Bueckers began to understand the need for stronger leadership on the court. The turning point came when the Huskies blew out South Carolina 87-58, snapping the Gamecocks’ 71-home game winning streak. UConn didn’t lose a single game after that, and Bueckers walked away as a national champion with a newfound appreciation for Auriemma’s coaching methods.
‘Coach has a very unique way of getting the best out of his players,’ Bueckers said. ‘And at times it was difficult being able to handle that burden, but to be in that moment, it all paid off on the biggest stage. I think that just completely changed my life.’
The documentary also explores the complex relationships between Auriemma and his other players, including Rebecca Lobo and Diana Taurasi. Lobo, a foundational superstar who helped put the program on the national map, had her own share of difficult moments with Auriemma. ‘He was incredibly hard on me,’ Lobo said. ‘You are the worst post player in America. The dumbest smart person in America.’ Like, yelling at me constantly, which was really hard for me as a 17- and 18-year-old to understand because no one had really ever coached me in that way.’
Despite the challenges they faced, the UConn players and coaches have spoken highly of Auriemma’s coaching methods. ‘He was the only coach that was willing to tell me that, even before I committed to Connecticut,’ said UConn commit Olivia Vukosa. Auriemma’s willingness to push his players to their limits has been a hallmark of his coaching style, and it has yielded impressive results for the Huskies.
The documentary also delves into the rivalry between Auriemma and Pat Summitt, the legendary coach of the Tennessee Lady Vols. The two coaches had a complicated relationship, marked by tension and disagreements. However, despite their differences, there was a deep respect between them. ‘When this happened with Pat, it’s a contemporary of yours and it really hits home,’ Auriemma said. ‘We were different people. Grew up different, maybe viewed the world differently. But at the same time, as competitors we were the same in a lot of ways.’
The documentary ‘The Dynasty: UConn Huskies’ is a must-watch for anyone interested in college basketball and the complex relationships between coaches and players. It offers a unique glimpse into the world of UConn basketball and the people who have made it a dynasty.
