Blurring the Line Between Reality and Fantasy in The Witcher 3

The world of gaming has come a long way since the early days of pixelated characters and simplistic gameplay. Today, developers strive to create immersive experiences that transport players to new and exciting realms. However, with the rise of advanced graphics and AI-powered simulations, the line between reality and fantasy becomes increasingly blurred. CD Projekt Red’s Philipp Weber, a designer on The Witcher 3, recently shared his insights on the challenges of convincing players of the game’s NPC simulation.

In an interview with Edge Magazine, Weber explained that the key to creating believable NPCs lies in providing them with a sense of purpose and agency. ‘If a village only has eight houses, people will want to see if the people truly exist in the world or if it’s just fakery,’ he said. ‘Lots of people nowadays are interested in those kinds of details, and it really came to haunt us.’

One of the most significant challenges the development team faced was creating NPCs that could adapt to different situations. Weber recalled a particular instance where the player would use combat moves in the middle of town, causing NPCs to drop whatever they were holding and scramble. While this mostly worked, there was an issue with mothers swaddling their babies, who would also drop their children and run. ‘For a few weeks, women were just dropping their babies, left and right,’ Weber said, highlighting the importance of attention to detail in game development.

To address this issue, the team implemented a system where NPCs would have spots of interest that they would visit and interact with. This approach allowed for more unpredictable behavior, making the game feel more alive and immersive. Weber explained that they didn’t give NPCs specific paths, but rather provided them with options and let them make their own decisions. ‘For the 50 sailors at Novigrad harbour, for example, we made 200 possible spots, so even if all 50 were active at the same time, they would have options.’

The importance of attention to detail in game development cannot be overstated. Players today are more discerning than ever, and a game that fails to deliver on its promises can quickly lose its appeal. Weber’s insights offer a valuable lesson for developers looking to create immersive experiences that transport players to new and exciting realms.

CD Projekt Red’s commitment to detail is evident in the game’s world design and NPC simulation. The Witcher 3’s world is rich and immersive, with a sense of depth and history that draws players in. The game’s NPCs are equally impressive, with a range of behaviors and interactions that make them feel alive and responsive. By prioritizing attention to detail, the development team was able to create a game that truly stands out from the crowd.

In the end, the key to creating believable NPCs lies in providing them with a sense of purpose and agency. By giving them options and letting them make their own decisions, developers can create NPCs that feel alive and responsive. As Weber noted, ‘today, if you said ‘give me a Witcher 3 village that has eight houses’, I could give you that in two hours.’ But it’s not just about the quantity of detail; it’s about the quality and the attention to detail that goes into creating a truly immersive experience.
