Chulpan Khamatova to Star in Alexander Molochnikov’s Feature-Length Film ‘The Extremists’
Acclaimed Russian Actress Chulpan Khamatova Set to Star in Alexander Molochnikov’s Feature-Length Film ‘The Extremists’
Chulpan Khamatova, the renowned Russian actress known for her critically acclaimed performances in films like ‘Good Bye Lenin’ and ‘Country of the Deaf’, has been cast in Alexander Molochnikov’s feature-length film ‘The Extremists’. The project is a feature-length version of Molochnikov’s Oscar-shortlisted short film ‘Extremist’, which centered around a young Russian artist who secretly replaced food labels in a Moscow supermarket with pacifist messages.
The original short film, which was shortlisted for an Oscar, told the story of a young Russian artist who replaced food labels in a Moscow supermarket with pacifist messages, leading to her arrest and a potential 10-year prison sentence. The feature-length film expands on this narrative, incorporating two newly shot perspectives in addition to the original short.
Building on the premise of the short film, ‘The Extremists’ draws inspiration from hundreds of real stories from contemporary Russia. However, it’s essential to note that the film is a work of fiction, and no character is intended to portray any specific individual. The film’s narrative is divided into three distinct storylines, each with its own tone and emotional world.
Acclaimed cinematographers Manuel Alberto Claro and Benoît Delhomme are set to join the film, alongside Mikhail Krichman, who served as the director of photography on the original short film. The three cinematographers will bring their unique visual styles to the film, with Claro and Delhomme lensing the two additional storylines and Krichman contributing his cinematography from the original short.
The project is being produced by AR Content, the production banner of veteran arthouse producer Alexander Rodnyansky, in collaboration with Forma Pro Films. Rodnyansky, who has a history of producing critically acclaimed films, including ‘Leviathan’ and ‘Loveless’, expressed his excitement about having Khamatova on board, stating that she is one of the few Russian artists of her stature who chose to speak out against the war, even though it cost her career in her home country.
Commenting on the project, Molochnikov said, ‘The project began as my graduation film, with acclaimed cinematographer Mikhail Krichman shaping the original visual language. As it evolved into a feature exploring the stories of political prisoners in Russia, the screenplay branched out into three distinct storylines, each with its own tone and emotional world.’ He further added that each perspective needed its own visual identity within the film, which led to the decision to work with three cinematographers.
The news comes ahead of AR Content’s upcoming projects, including ‘Place to Be’, starring Ellen Burstyn, Taika Waititi, and Pamela Anderson, and ‘The Road to Jericho’, a documentary by Amos Gitai, which will premiere at the Venice Film Festival. AR Content is also set to release ‘High Value Target: The Hunt for Saddam’, a limited series starring Joel Kinnaman about the first American to identify and interrogate Saddam Hussein, on TNT in September.
