Amazon has announced a significant expansion of its Prime Air service in the US, with plans to serve nearly 500 towns and cities with drone deliveries by the end of the year. This marks a sixfold increase from current levels, with Prime Air currently operating in 10 metro areas from 11 sites, each covering 175 square miles.

The company aims to expand service to the Chicago and Atlanta metro areas, as well as in the regions of Syracuse, New York; Cleveland, Ohio; and Boise, Idaho. Amazon plans to move into more areas later this year, bringing the total number of towns and cities served by Prime Air to nearly 500.
According to Amazon, its drones can deliver nearly any item weighing five pounds or less that can fit into a large shoebox via drone. Most orders are fulfilled within 60 minutes, with some arriving in just half an hour. Prime members get free drone delivery on orders that cost at least $50, while non-Prime members pay a $5 fee for drone delivery on orders under $50.
Amazon’s Prime Air service has been operational in the Phoenix, Tampa, Kansas City, Omaha (Nebraska), Baton Rouge (Louisiana), Detroit, Houston, San Antonio, Dallas, and Waco (Texas) metro areas. The company has not disclosed the specific locations where drone deliveries will be available in the Chicago and Atlanta metro areas, but has stated that it will provide more information in the coming months.
