Flea Markets in the Big Apple

It’s good to arrive at a New York City flea market with a plan; you know you’ve found a good one when you abandon that plan entirely. Whether you’re a curious traveler, die-hard scavenger, or haggling collector with an affinity for old things, wander along any sprawling, bustling, junk-and-jewel-filled aisle of a flea on the Upper East Side or in Dumbo, and you’re guaranteed not to leave empty-handed.

Some people find it easier to go in seeking a specific Fiestaware colorway or pair of Levi’s worn in just right, years of antiquing along the East Coast and driving around in search of a yard sale have taught me efficiency is far from the point of a flea. It’s the rummaging, and the negotiating, and the old New Yorkers with their stories which make an afternoon’s hour or two more than worth it—and finding a slinky silk scarf from the 1920s that you didn’t know you needed is a nice addition, too.

Grand Bazaar: A Flea Market Institution

What began as a yard sale in 1979 has since become the city’s longest-standing, continuous flea, and, as its name suggests, it’s perhaps the grandest. When you enter on Columbus Avenue, you’ll find food vendors selling katsu sandwiches, empanadas, and barrels of pickles to the right, then rows and rows of clothes, jewelry, and baubles in just about every other direction, extending into the school’s cafeteria space.
