As a fan of cooperative games, I’m always excited to see what’s bubbling up on Steam’s algorithm. The latest addition to this genre is ‘How to Fish’, a 1-4 player physics-based fishing simulator that’s all about having fun with your pals.

Developed by a team that clearly understands the importance of keeping things light and enjoyable, ‘How to Fish’ drops you and your friends on a barren, rocky islet after a drunken crash landing. You start by surviving on clams, but soon you’ll be able to sell them for cash to buy a fishing rod and learn how to catch more substantial prey.

The fishing element is relatively simple: cast your line, wait for a bite, and reel it in. However, things get more interesting after you’ve landed a catch. Instead of just adding it to your inventory, fish and other sea-life will flop, scuttle, or crawl around on land until you’ve subdued them. Initially, you’ll have to use your fists to do this, but over time, you can purchase knives, brass knuckles, and even guns to exact bloody vengeance on the ocean.

Needless to say, ‘How to Fish’ is an extremely silly game. You can launch fish into the air and blast them with firearms, a la Ridiculous Fishing. You can also barbecue seagulls and gamble your catch on slot machines and roulette wheels for a chance to gain even more cash. But ‘How to Fish’ isn’t just about mindless fun – there’s also a chain of islands to explore, complete with bigger, more dangerous catches like sharks and king crabs.
While the game is clearly built for cooperative play, it can also be enjoyed solo. However, some players have reported lax security at the backend, allowing random players to drop into the game and cause chaos. As such, it’s worth keeping this in mind before diving in.
For those who are interested in trying out ‘How to Fish’, it’s currently available at an introductory discount that brings the price down from $8 (£6.40) to $5 (£4). This offer ends on August 27, so be sure to grab it before it’s too late.
‘How to Fish’ is available on Steam, and the system requirements are as follows:
So, if sniping fish from the sky sounds like your idea of a good time, be sure to check out ‘How to Fish’ before the discount ends.
