Costco Launches Medicare Advantage Plans with SCAN Group, Banking on Brand Trust
Costco Enters the Medicare Advantage Market with SCAN Group
Costco, the popular membership-based warehouse club, is set to launch Medicare Advantage plans in partnership with SCAN Group, a California-based nonprofit healthcare provider. The move aims to leverage the trust and reputation that Costco has built with its customers, particularly among the aging population.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Costco will be launching a trial of its Medicare Advantage plans in two states and a Medicare supplement in a third, although the specific states have not been revealed. This partnership with SCAN Group will allow Costco to expand its reach and offerings in the healthcare space, building on its reputation for providing affordable and reliable products to its customers.
‘We’re trying to create a win-win,’ said Sachin H. Jain, CEO of SCAN Health Plan, in an interview with USA Today. ‘Something that was going to be good for seniors, good for SCAN, and good for Costco.’
Costco’s Senior Vice President for Pharmacy, Richard Stephens, echoed this sentiment, stating that the company aims to build on its reputation for reliability and trust, much like its beloved rotisserie chicken and Kirkland products. ‘Customers know that if they buy something from Costco, it has been vetted, and [they] feel it’s the best thing in the category,’ Stephens explained.
Carrie Graham, Director of the Medicare Policy Initiative at Georgetown University’s Center on Health Insurance Reform, praised the idea as ‘brilliant marketing.’ She noted that Costco’s strong brand trust, particularly among older adults, will be a significant asset in expanding its pharmacy, vision, hearing, and over-the-counter products. ‘There’s a really strong trust in the brand, especially among older adults,’ Graham said.
The partnership between Costco and SCAN Group also has operational benefits for SCAN, as it will be able to leverage Costco’s reach to recruit Medicare plan members, rather than relying solely on insurance brokers. This will allow SCAN to expand its access to Medicare Advantage plans at a time when some insurers are dropping the coverage.
As the partners move forward with their plans, the details still need to be worked out and approved by the federal government. The pilot program is expected to launch between October 15 and December 7, when Americans can sign up, switch, or cancel Medicare plans.
The Benefits of a Costco-Branded Medicare Advantage Plan
A Costco-branded Medicare Advantage plan could offer several benefits to its customers, including:
- Access to a wide range of healthcare services, including pharmacy, vision, hearing, and over-the-counter products.
- A trusted brand reputation, which could lead to increased customer loyalty and retention.
- A potential increase in operational savings for SCAN Group, as it leverages Costco’s reach to recruit Medicare plan members.
While the details of the partnership are still being worked out, one thing is clear: Costco is entering the Medicare Advantage market with a strong brand reputation and a trusted partner in SCAN Group.
