Costco Expands Its Membership Base with Medicare Advantage Plans
Costco Takes a Strategic Leap into the Medicare Advantage Market
Costco, the renowned warehouse club, has been a go-to destination for consumers seeking bulk purchases of household goods, produce, and snacks at affordable prices. However, the company’s offerings extend far beyond these staples, encompassing services such as gasoline, travel, and optical services.
In a significant move, Costco is partnering with SCAN Health Plan, a nonprofit insurer, to offer Costco-branded Medicare Advantage plans in two states, along with a Medicare supplement plan in a third state, pending regulatory approval. This strategic partnership marks a pivotal moment in Costco’s evolution, as the company seeks to strengthen its relationships with an aging customer base.
Medicare Advantage plans have become an integral part of the U.S. healthcare system, with an estimated 35 million Americans enrolled in such plans as of earlier this year, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF). These plans often provide benefits beyond those offered by original Medicare, including dental services, eye exams, hearing aids, and fitness club memberships. Additionally, they cap annual out-of-pocket spending, offering retirees on a budget greater peace of mind.
Costco’s entry into the Medicare Advantage market presents an opportunity for the company to apply its expertise in simplifying complex consumer decisions while emphasizing value. By partnering with SCAN, Costco can leverage its brand recognition, customer relationships, and physical locations, while SCAN provides the necessary insurance expertise.
