Major Supermarket Chains Embark on Downsizing Plans

Major supermarket chains, including Kroger, Stop & Shop, and The Raley’s Companies, are undergoing a significant transformation in their business strategies. This downsizing mode, which began in 2025, will continue for some companies through 2027, affecting various store locations and employees.

Raley’s Closes Stores, Impacts Employees

The Raley’s Companies have announced plans to close seven store locations in California and Nevada, citing local market conditions and long-term financial sustainability as the primary reasons. The closures will affect 48 workers’ jobs, with the company offering transfer opportunities to as many affected employees as possible.

The West Sacramento, California-based grocery store chain began its downsizing plan in January 2026 with the closing of its Raley’s store in Roseville, California. This was followed by the closure of its store in Antioch, California, in April 2026, after the lease expired. In May 2026, the chain shuttered a Nob Hill Foods store in Mountain View, California, affecting 50 employees.

The company also plans to close its Raley’s store in Brentwood, California, on November 3, 2026, and an Elko, Nevada location in December 2026. In January 2027, the chain will close another Northern California store located in Petaluma, California, impacting 48 workers’ jobs.
