Gen Z’s Digital Natives: The Key to a Positive Work-Life Balance

When it comes to the younger generation, there’s often a perception that they’re too entitled, too demanding, and too disconnected from the workforce. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. In fact, Gen Z’s comfort with technology is a huge advantage, and one that can help them build a healthy relationship with work.

According to George Brasher, HP’s North American senior vice president and managing director, Gen Z’s digital native status is a major factor in their ability to work smarter, not harder. ‘I think Gen Z’s comfort with technology is a huge advantage,’ he said. ‘They’ve grown up experimenting with new tools, so they’re often quick to figure out how technology can help them work smarter and solve problems differently.’

One of the key ways Gen Z uses technology to their advantage is by leveraging AI to automate routine tasks and free up time for more meaningful work. ‘That’s where Gen Z has a real opportunity,’ Brasher noted. ‘Use technology to become more efficient, then invest that time back into the things technology can’t replace: building relationships, earning trust, and understanding what people need.’

But it’s not just about using AI to get more done. It’s also about using it to maintain a healthy work-life balance. ‘The goal isn’t to use AI to do more work,’ Brasher explained. ‘It’s to spend more time on the work that matters most.’

So, how can you, as a knowledge worker, start using AI to your advantage? Here are five ways to get started:

  • Automate routine tasks: From sorting emails to scheduling your calendar, AI can save you countless hours of administrative work.
  • Let AI do the first draft: Use AI to generate job descriptions, work briefs, or presentations, and then edit the final draft to ensure it meets your needs.
  • Data and design: Use AI to analyze data and create graphs and images for reports or presentations.
  • Make AI your gatekeeper: Use AI to unschedule unnecessary meetings, deflect non-urgent messages, and defend blocks of deep-work time.
  • Use AI at home: Establish work-life boundaries by having AI block messages outside of work hours and track your time to avoid burnout.

By embracing AI and using it to our advantage, we can build a healthier relationship with work and achieve a better balance between our professional and personal lives.

As Brasher noted, ‘The strongest teams combine experience with fresh perspectives, and that’s where some of the best ideas come from.’ By embracing the digital native status of Gen Z and using AI to our advantage, we can create a more positive and productive work environment for everyone.
