Brighton Hammer Aston Villa with Four Early Goals, João Gomes’ Red Card Adds to Unai Emery’s Misery
Brighton’s Dominant Display Leaves Aston Villa Reeling
Brighton & Hove Albion’s Jack Hinshelwood scored twice in quick succession to help his team establish a 4-0 lead by the 31st minute against Aston Villa in a Premier League match that turned out to be a disastrous start to the season for Unai Emery’s team.
The defeat was compounded by the red card given to Villa’s João Gomes for violent conduct, which added to the misery of a team that had already seen the departure of several key players, including Morgan Rogers, Ezri Konsa, and Youri Tielemans, during the summer transfer window.
The match began on a sour note for Villa when Victor Lindelöf was powerless to prevent an own goal in the eighth minute. Maxim De Cuyper’s shot from a tight angle bounced off the woodwork and onto Lindelöf, who was unable to clear the ball, giving Brighton the lead.
De Cuyper then found the back of the net from Georginio Rutter’s cross, before Hinshelwood scored his first goal of the match with an assist from Diego Gómez. Shortly afterwards, it was 4-0 to Brighton when Gomes was caught in possession on the edge of the penalty area, leaving his team with a mountain to climb.
The only saving grace for Villa was that the scoring was over, and they were able to avoid further embarrassment.
The match marked a disappointing start to the season for Unai Emery’s team, which will look to regroup and bounce back in their next fixture.
Brighton, on the other hand, will be looking to build on their dominant display and continue their strong start to the season.
David Hytner’s report from the Amex Stadium will follow shortly.
