An extraordinary monument to the Virgin Mary, believed to be the tallest in Europe, has been inaugurated in the small Polish village of Konotopie. Standing at an impressive 55.6 meters (182 feet) tall, this enormous statue towers over the village, its height including a crown-shaped 15-meter (49-foot) pedestal.

The statue was commissioned by local millionaires Roman and Grażyna Karkosik, who reside in a small palace just a few kilometers from Konotopie. The couple’s decision to build this massive monument is an expression of their gratitude to God, particularly following Roman Karkosik’s recent illness.

According to Roman Karkosik, an entrepreneur whose ventures have included plastic-bottle manufacturing in the 1990s, the couple’s goal is to create a space where people can come to pray and reflect. The statue features a viewing platform built inside its pedestal, offering visitors a panoramic view of the surrounding area.

The influence of the Catholic Church in public life has gradually declined in recent years, particularly among younger people and in urban areas. However, the Church remains influential, especially in rural communities and among older generations. While there is a taller statue of the Virgin Mary in the Philippines, measuring 98 meters (322 feet) in height, the new statue in Poland is believed to be the largest of its kind in Europe.
