Football Transfer Rumors: Manchester City and Spurs Chase Cody Gakpo
As the Premier League’s opening weekend comes to a close, the transfer window is heating up, and teams are scrambling to strengthen their squads. One of the most significant transfer rumors surrounding Manchester City and Tottenham is the chase for Liverpool’s Cody Gakpo.
Manchester City has been linked with a move for the Dutch winger, who has been in high demand this summer. The Reds, however, are struggling to progress on a deal for Bradley Barcola, and it seems they will have to wait a bit longer to secure his signature. Meanwhile, City have also been eyeing Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga as a potential midfield replacement for Alex Scott.
Aston Villa, who endured a dismal opening weekend, are looking to reshape their forward line. Milan’s Rafael Leão has been touted as a potential signing, and it seems he could be the answer to Unai Emery’s attacking troubles. The Villans are not just concentrating their efforts on the forward line, though, as they are also eyeing Rangers’ Nicolas Raskin to bolster their midfield. Club Brugge centre-back Joel Ordóñez is also on their radar, and it seems Southampton’s reluctance to let Taylor Harwood-Bellis go may have opened the door for the Belgian defender.
Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso has repeatedly refused to rule out an exit for Enzo Fernández, and it seems Manchester City have been listening in on the situation. The Blues are still keen on Alex Scott as a midfield replacement, but time may be running out to snap up the Bournemouth star. It’s claimed Chelsea have seen three bids for Scott rejected this summer, so they may turn their attention to Real Madrid’s Eduardo Camavinga instead.
Down in the Championship, Sheffield United have drawn their first two league games 0-0, and Chris Wilder has identified central defence as an area that needs strengthening. Adam Webster, a free agent after leaving Brighton, is of interest to the Blades.
Wrexham, meanwhile, are looking to sign Pavel Sulc, who is valued at around £10m by his current employers Lyon. The Welsh club have obviously spent big on their French scouting budget this summer, given they also covet Jacques Ekomié, the Angers left-back. However, they may face competition from West Ham, who are preparing for the possibility of Brentford snapping up El Hadji Malick Diouf.
And could Dele Alli be set for another return to Serie A? Monza apparently want to take a gamble on the midfielder, who has been training with West Ham this summer. The former Tottenham prodigy is now 30 and was last seen in March 2025 getting sent off on his only appearance for Como.
