NATO Jets Intercept and Destroy Unidentified Drone in Romanian Airspace
A dramatic incident unfolded in the early hours of Sunday morning when NATO fighter jets shot down an unidentified drone that had entered Romanian airspace without authorization. The incident highlights the increasing importance of airspace security and the vigilance of NATO forces in protecting their member countries’ skies.
According to Romanian Defense Minister Radu Miruța, two Spanish F-18 jets were scrambled in response to the drone entering Romanian airspace at 4:44 a.m. Sunday near the border with Moldova. The drone was intercepted and destroyed between the localities of Bǎleni and Cudalbi, in Galați County, in an unpopulated area.
At 5:01 a.m., the drone was successfully engaged and destroyed, thanks to the swift response of the NATO forces. The incident marks the third time in recent weeks that Romania has had to scramble its air defenses to intercept and destroy unauthorized drones.
In a statement, Minister Miruța emphasized the importance of airspace security, stating, ‘Romania is defending its airspace, and our allies are standing with us. Vigilance, rapid response, and allied solidarity – these are the concrete guarantees of our security.’
The incident is particularly significant given the recent increase in drone activity near Romanian airspace. On July 26, a Romanian F-16 shot down a Russian drone that entered Romanian airspace near the delta of the Danube River in the Black Sea. Two days prior, Romania shot down another drone that was found to be the type Russia has used in its invasion of Ukraine.
Furthermore, on Thursday, Spanish F-18s were also scrambled after an object was spotted in Romanian airspace near the Ukrainian border. The object spent 12 minutes in Romanian airspace before moving into Ukraine.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for enhanced airspace security measures and the importance of international cooperation in preventing and responding to unauthorized drone activity.
