Netflix International Film Exec Sasha Bühler Exits Role After Almost Four Years
Netflix has announced the departure of Sasha Bühler, a key figure in the streamer’s international film division. As the Director of Film for German-speaking Europe, Bühler played a crucial role in shaping the creative strategy for the company’s international original film division. Her departure comes after almost four years of service with the company.
Bühler joined Netflix in 2019, initially taking on the role of Director of Film for Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, the Nordics, and CEE. Based out of London, she was tasked with establishing regional teams and setting the creative direction for the international original film division. In 2021, she relocated to Berlin to drive the overall strategy in German-speaking Europe, a core market for Netflix. This move was part of the company’s efforts to pursue ‘local for local’ hits.
During her tenure at Netflix, Bühler worked on several high-profile projects, including the critically acclaimed film ‘All Quiet on the Western Front.’ The movie earned nine Academy Award nominations and won four, including Best International Feature Film and Best Cinematography. The film also garnered fourteen BAFTA nominations and took home seven wins.
Bühler’s departure has been confirmed by Netflix, with Katja Hofem currently leading all Netflix programming for Germany, spanning series, film, unscripted, and acquisitions. There is no word yet on Bühler’s next move.
Before joining Netflix, Bühler held a key position at German distribution and production giant Constantin Film, where she served as Head of Acquisitions and International Co-Productions. During her eleven-year tenure, she acquired several notable films, including ‘Dirty Grandpa,’ ‘Florence Foster Jenkins,’ ‘You Were Never Really Here,’ and ‘All Eyez on Me.’
Bühler’s departure marks a significant shift in Netflix’s international film division. As the company continues to evolve and expand its global reach, it will be interesting to see how this change impacts its creative strategy and future projects.
