NPR Senior Podcast Challenge: A Chance to Shine

The NPR Senior Podcast Challenge is an exciting opportunity for seniors aged 65 and above to showcase their creativity and storytelling skills through podcasting. This competition is designed to bring together seniors from across the United States and provide them with a platform to share their experiences, thoughts, and ideas with a wider audience.

The contest is sponsored by National Public Radio (NPR), a nonprofit organization with a long history of promoting quality journalism and storytelling. The challenge is open to U.S. residents aged 65 and above, and participants can submit their audio files between August 16, 2026, and November 30, 2026.

Eligibility and Participation

To be eligible for the contest, participants must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a U.S. resident aged 65 and above.
  • Not be an employee, representative, agent, director, or officer of NPR or its parent, subsidiary, or affiliated companies, member stations, or other parties involved in the administration of the contest.
  • Not be an immediate family member or other person living in the same household as the excluded individuals mentioned above.

Participants can submit their audio files through SoundCloud, Podbean, or Anchor, and must complete the submission form available at https://npr.formstack.com/forms/senior_podcast_challenge. The submission form requires participants to provide an explanation of their podcast, limited to 200 words, and upload their podcast to the designated platform.

Submission Guidelines

Submissions must meet the following guidelines:

  • Be between three and eight minutes in length.
  • Be the original work of the participant.
  • Not be generated, in whole or in material part, by artificial intelligence tools.
  • Include live performances of public domain songs or non-copyrightable rhythm elements, if relevant to the story.
  • Not include any material that violates or infringes another’s rights, including but not limited to material that violates privacy, publicity, or intellectual property rights.

Participants are encouraged to err on the side of excluding music if they are unsure whether it is copyrighted or not. Entries will be disqualified if they contain materials that appear to infringe copyrights, trademarks, or other intellectual property rights of others.

Judging and Prizes

The contest will be judged by up to two panels of judges selected by the Sponsor. The judging period will begin on December 1, 2026, and end on or about January 15, 2027. Eight finalists, including one Grand Prize Winner, will be selected. The Grand Prize Winner will receive a trip to NPR Headquarters and have their podcast featured on NPR across multiple platforms. The seven other finalists will receive a trophy and NPR-branded merchandise with an ARV of $150.

The Finalists and Grand Prize Winner will be publicly announced on or about February 1, 2027. The Sponsor will attempt to contact each Finalist and the Grand Prize Winner, or an alternate if necessary, on or about January 15, 2027, and in accordance with Section 6 of these Official Rules.

Conclusion

The NPR Senior Podcast Challenge is an exciting opportunity for seniors to showcase their creativity and storytelling skills through podcasting. With its unique submission guidelines and judging process, this contest provides a platform for seniors to share their experiences and ideas with a wider audience. We encourage all eligible participants to submit their audio files and take part in this exciting competition.
